Photo on canvas: how to choose the image, size and price

Canvas printing starts at €30. A bigger format takes more canvas and ink, so the price rises with the size. We give you the exact total once we have seen the photo and know how big you want the canvas.

Preparation is not charged automatically. If the file is fine, none is needed. If the image needs work before printing, we agree on the scope and cost before we start.

For canvas printing, about 150 pixels per inch (ppi) at the final size is enough. Large canvases are viewed from a distance, so they can get away with less, around 100 ppi. The table shows what that means in pixels for common sizes.

A phone with a 12-megapixel camera takes photos of about 4000 × 3000 px. By the table, that is enough for a canvas up to about 60 × 40 cm at full quality, and for a larger one if it is viewed from a couple of metres away.

A 1280 × 720 px photo at 150 ppi only suits a canvas of about 22 × 12 cm. That is why such a file looks blurry in a large format, however good it looks on a phone screen.

Send the original file through Google Drive, by e-mail as an attachment, or bring it on a USB stick. A canvas shows every flaw you cannot see on a phone screen, so the photo has to reach us exactly as it is in the original.

Better not to send:

• a photo by WhatsApp, because it compresses the image;
• a screenshot from your phone;
• a photo downloaded from social media, because they compress images too.

Canvas has a texture, so very fine detail and small text look softer on it than on photo paper. Photos with a clear main subject look best: portraits, animals, landscapes, and images of paintings and illustrations.

We have printed wildlife photos, illustrations and series of fashion illustrations, as well as images of paintings. The long format, up to 4 m, suits panoramas such as a landscape or a city view.

• Dark, noisy night shots look grainy when enlarged.
• If the photo contains text, it needs to be large enough to read from a distance.
• Do not leave the most important part of the photo right at the edge.

2. We show you how the photo will look at that size and give you the price. We start only once you approve.
3. The canvas is ready from 2 days. Collect it in Kuldīga, or we ship it by courier or post anywhere in Latvia.
